Hello and welcome to Year 5

We are very excited about all of the things we have planned for the year and can’t wait to see how the children develop and progress.

English lessons are taught daily and spelling and handwriting are regularly taught throughout the week. Weekly spelling homework will be based on what is being covered in class and there is an expectation that the children use the handwriting style they have now been introduced to. Our class book will be based on Learning Enquiries being taught in Science, History or Geography – please ask if you would like more detail about these.

Reading diaries will be checked and books changed on a Friday. Your child is, of course, free to come and request to change their books midweek, if finished.

Maths

Maths lessons take place daily and topics will be regularly assessed, to ensure progress and help us to plug gaps. Skills taught will be revisited and built upon throughout the year. We encourage the children to access Times Tables Rockstars to keep their multiplication and division skills sharp and there will also be some focused maths homework.

Science/Geography/History

In Science, we are starting with a study of space, before going on to forces, including gravity. In History, we are looking at Britain after the Romans and the impact they had, as well as studying Baghdad as an early Islamic civilisation, and contrasting this with Britain. In Geography, we will be looking at the impact trees have on our lives, considering the biodiversity they can provide, as well as their role in combatting and preventing global warming. We will also look at the importance of other natural resources and their importance to the world. Mapping and compass skills will regularly support and develop our geographical learning.

Year 5 will undertake a residential to Menai, in the spring term, and various other visits and visitors into school, linked to curriculum topics, will support our learning.

PE

PE is on a Monday and Friday, during the first half term of autumn.

Music Tuition

Specialist music tutors will teach the children to play clarinet on Wednesday mornings. The children will be bringing home their woodwind instrument, in the next few weeks. Please encourage your child to practise as much as possible and ensure they are back in school ready for their lesson on Wednesday!

Homework

Homework will be set on a Wednesday, to be returned by the following Monday. The children will receive a piece of written Maths and Literacy (usually in their homework books) and weekly spellings. The children will also be expected to complete work on TT Rockstars and to access this regularly throughout the week.

Learning Missions will be set for every half term break and are intended as fun, creative projects to support and enhance the learning that has already taken place in class. We can’t wait to see the wonderful, creative missions the children produce, over the year!
